First Alert Forecast: Could another storm be brewing behind Lala?

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii is finally getting a little breathing room after Lala with the trades building — but the tropics aren’t hitting the pause button just yet. This Sunday into Monday, models are suggesting another storm will be near the islands.

First, my heart is with the families and communities still picking up the pieces after Lala. For many, the storm may have moved on, but the cleanup, repairs and recovery are just beginning.

Please continue looking out for one another and checking on neighbors who may need a helping hand.

Weather-wise, a more typical trade wind pattern is returning tonight, with showers favoring windward and mauka areas.

The trades will weaken Wednesday through Friday, which will allow more moisture and showers to spread into leeward areas. Then, late Friday into Saturday, the trades strengthen again and pull additional moisture toward the islands.

And there’s something else we’re watching.

A tropical wave well east-southeast of Hawaii has an 80% chance of developing over the next 7 days. Conditions appear favorable for further development, and a tropical depression could form within the next few days.

Initial models: Most forecast guidance currently keeps the potential system south of the Hawaiian Islands.

The important caveat: It hasn’t formed yet, so there is still considerable uncertainty about its eventual track and strength.

After what Hawaii just experienced with Lala, I know many people are watching the tropics a little more closely.
