First Alert Forecast: Beautiful Sunday as kids get ready for the new school year!

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Good Sunday morning, there is a little chill in the air if you’re an early riser. However, things will warm up quite quickly making it a fairly typical summer day here in Hawaii Nei. Many keiki start school this week at public schools and it will be a lovely start to the new school year as kiddos kick off the start of school wanted to wish them the very best!

Strong trade winds are still making for a breezy day across the islands, but the good news is they’ll gradually ease over the next several days as the strong high pressure north of Hawaii weakens. By the middle of the week, winds should settle back to more typical summertime levels.

As the trades relax, expect the usual pattern of passing showers favoring windward and mauka communities, especially overnight and during the morning hours.

By midweek, Tropical Storm Genevieve is expected to weaken well northeast of Hawaii, but it may temporarily disrupt our trade winds and help send additional moisture toward the islands.

Forecast models are also watching an upper-level disturbance that could move near Kauai during the middle of the week. If it develops as expected, moisture could increase statewide, bringing more widespread clouds and a better chance for moderate to locally heavy showers—especially across the western half of the state.

On the water, trade winds are slowly easing, but Small Craft Advisories remain in effect for many waters today, with the windier channels around Maui County and the Big Island likely holding onto advisory-level conditions into Monday. East shore surf will stay rough and choppy thanks to strong trades and a lingering swell from Genevieve.

South shore surf remains below average this week, though a couple of small swells will keep some waves in the forecast, with the potential for a larger south swell early next week. North shores will remain mostly flat.

Fire weather concerns are also easing as winds weaken. If more moisture moves in later this week, humidity should increase and fire danger will continue to decrease.
