El Nino storms flood Waiahole family farm for third time this year

Waters raged into Seguin Family Farms, damaging dozens of Saba banana, ti-leaf and vegetable trellises.
The flood hit out of nowhere – bringing in debris and waters rapidly – then washing out in less than an hour.
“You never realize… how damaging water can be,” said Jordan Seguin.
This is the third time the farm has flooded this year, creating concern over how the business will do as more storms come from this year’s El Niño.
The family cleared out waterways after Hurricane Lala, but this time, the farm was hit by even more water.

“Everything just keeps getting worse,” Seguin said. “I’m just thinking months ahead, how much… we could have been harvesting. But it’s gonna take time.”
Seguin says recovery efforts have begun, but more support is needed.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family remove debris, replant crops and fix damages. Currently, the farm has no running water due to a damaged backflow water system.
“For us, this farm is more than just a place where we grow food,” Seguin posted to the page. “It is where our family works together, where we share Filipino culture, and where we continue the values behind Buhay Probinsya — The Simple Life.”
