Detectives arrest 24-year-old woman in connection to fatal Kailua shooting
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – During the investigation into the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Thomas Malone in Kailua on Saturday, detectives identified a 24-year-old woman as the suspect.
On Monday just before 11 p.m., officers located and apprehended the suspect.
She was arrested for murder in the second degree and firearm offenses. Charges will be sought with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney.
The investigation is ongoing.
Honolulu police asked the public for more photos and videos as they investigate Saturday’s fatal shooting in the Kailua Target parking lot on Monday.
Police said officers responded just after 8:30 p.m. to the parking lot near the Kailua Fall Festival, where hundreds of people were in attendance.
Investigators said two groups had been arguing at the festival before the dispute continued into the Target parking lot.
Police said the woman then pulled out a firearm and shot a 30-year-old man.
Honolulu EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
On Monday, the medical examiners office identified the 30-year-old man as Thomas Malone.
After the shooting, a performer on stage addressed the crowd.
“Stay your a** home if you got a handle, stay your a** home, that’s not what we’re about in Hawaii nei, here in Hawaii nei we’re all about aloha,” the performer said.
For people working nearby, the timing was especially jarring.
“We left around, I think, 8:20, 8:15 around that, and I think the people say that the shot happened like about 8:30 so it was really close,” Paia Fish Market manager Lucas Falcao said.

“I was not expecting that, because here is so safe and so calm,” he added. “Everyone was feeling really safe. We have a lot of police around; we didn’t expect that. Everyone here was shocked.”
Kailua resident Kathy Guinovart said the shooting was sad and disheartening.
“As a mother, you just want to protect your kids, and it’s really sad to hear about the families being affected,” she said. “I just hope that people can find a solution and relax.”
Hawaii News Now saw the victim’s family at the parking lot Sunday. They declined to speak and asked for privacy as they grieve.
Police said detectives received surveillance footage from the festival but are now seeking additional photos or video taken Saturday, including around the Target parking lot at 345 Hahani Street.
HPD said even images or recordings that do not appear to show the shooting could contain information useful to the investigation.
Anyone with photos, videos or other information is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers Honolulu at 808-955-8300.
