Loved ones held a vigil for Thomas Malone, 30, who police said was fatally shot during a fight between two groups at the Kailua Target, across from the Kailua Fall Festival last Saturday.

Malone’s father was among those who spoke during the vigil and was grateful for the community’s support.

“My son Thomas Malone was a man of a big heart, a strong spirit, a hell of a sense of humor that could make anyone laugh, and a heart of a lion,” he said. “That’s why the community is coming out to support tonight.”

He questioned why anyone would bring a firearm to a family event.

“In Kailua, in Hawaii, there was never a thought of a fight ending in someone losing their life. You stand up like a man, you fight, you go home, get some ice, and live to fight another day,” Malone’s father said. “He didn’t need to lose his life because of it.”

Malone’s father told those gathered not to let hate root in their grief.

“Do not let hatred take the root in our grief. Do not let revenge take hold of our pain. Let truth come to light. Let justice be done,” he said.

The suspect, Hilinaikailimakualopali Keeno, 24, was indicted Friday on a count of second-degree murder and firearms offenses.

She is being held without bail at the Oahu Community Correctional Center and is due back in court Monday.

Keeno is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
