A broad ridge of high pressure north of the islands will keep moderate to locally strong easterly trade winds in place through the holiday. Those trades, combined with an upper-level trough near the state, will continue to bring occasional showers — mainly to windward and mauka communities.

Most leeward areas should stay relatively dry, though brief passing showers are still possible.

The First alert team has slightly increased expected wind speeds after newer high-resolution models suggested stronger trades than previously forecast. While some of the windiest spots could see near-advisory gusts, widespread damaging winds are not expected. For those heading out to beaches, parks, or outdoor Memorial Day gatherings, expect breezy conditions statewide with rough surf continuing along east-facing shores. South shore surf will gradually build again this week as a fresh long-period south swell arrives.
