91-year-old bicyclist dies after collision in Kekaha

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 91-year-old bicyclist died after being hit by an SUV in Kekaha Tuesday morning.

Kauai police said the crash happened around 7 a.m. at the intersection of ʻElepaio Road and Alae Road.

Investigators said a 62-year-old woman driving a 2018 Toyota SUV was traveling east on ʻElepaio Road when she turned left onto Alae Road and collided with the westbound bicyclist.

Police said the man, who was from Kekaha, was not wearing a helmet.

He was taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The intersection was closed for about two hours while officers investigated.

Police said speed and impairment do not appear to be factors at this time.
