Free water conservation event coming to Waianae this weekend

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A special event hosted by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, in partnership with the office of state Rep. Cedric Gates and area leaders, is inviting the community to highlight the essential role water plays in Hawaii.

“Imagine a Day Without Water” will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ark of Safety Christian Fellowship at Waianae Mall.

The free, family-friendly event brings education and resources directly to communities across the island, with this year’s focus on the Waianae Coast.

The Army Natural Resources Program on Oahu works to protect endangered species impacted by military training. Outreach and Volunteer Program Specialist Jenna Patague said Saturday’s booth will feature rare native plants endemic to the island such as mahoe, mehamehame and uhi uhi along with an interactive seed-matching activity for keiki and families.

“It’s very important to us, especially, you know, with these threatened and endangered species,” said Patague. “They’re so important to the ecosystem. They’re on the brink of extinction. But, you know, with our efforts to boost the populations and stabilize them, we can restore what is what we have left and make it better.”
