State Services scheduled for former Governor George Ariyoshi

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The community is invited to honor the life and legacy of former Governor George Ryoichi Ariyoshi during official state services held at the Hawai‘i State Capitol Rotunda today.

Both events will be livestreamed here on Hawaii News Now.

Lie in State

The ceremonial arrival and honor guard procession will take place at 10:00a. Performances by Urasenke Foundation of Hawaii, Waiahole Elementary School, McKinley High School, James Campbell High School, and Hahaione Elementary School will take place prior to the service.

Visitation will be open to the public starting today at 10:30a and will continue through Saturday, September 19, at 12:00 p.m.

State Service

A state service will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Hawai‘i State Capitol Rotunda.

Reserved seating is for invited guests only, with public seating available on a first-come-first serve basis.

Road Closures

Brief road closures are possible this morning during an HPD-escorted motorcade from Nu‘uanu Memorial Park & Mortuary to the Capitol, departing at approximately 9:45 a.m.

On September 19, immediately following the conculsion of the Lie in State, brief road closures are once again possible around 12:30 p.m. as the motorcade will take Governor Ariyoshi and his family on a Memorial Tour past parts of Honolulu. The tour will include the following locations before arriving at Kawaiaha‘o Church:

Washington Place; Princess Ruth Ke‘elikōlani Middle School; Old Amfac Building, where Governor Ariyoshi worked;Smith and Pauahi Street where Governor Ariyoshi grew up and where his mother operated a tofu cafe; First Hawaiian Bank building on South King Street where Governor Ariyoshi had an office; McKinley High School Roundabout for final farewell with students, faculty, alumni, and JROTC.
