USDA approves replacement SNAP benefits for Kauai households hit by Hurricane Lowell

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Households on Kauaʻi impacted by Hurricane Lowell could be eligible for replacement Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, federal officials announced Friday.

Rather than requiring households to report food losses individually, the U.S. Department of Agriculture allowed Hawaiʻi to approve automatic mass replacements of 60% of benefits for residents who lost food due to widespread power outages.

The waiver applies to Kauaʻi residents, federal officials said.

Recipients residing in other affected areas may request replacement benefits by filing an affidavit with their local office attesting to disaster-related loss.
