Flash flooding closes Highway 11 between Punaluu, Naalehu

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – Flash flooding has shut down a stretch of Highway 11 in Kau as heavy rain continues across parts of Hawaii Island.

The highway is closed between Punaluu and Naalehu, where a Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 11:32 p.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service reported flooding near mile marker 63 by the Naalehu Police Station and near mile marker 56 at Ninole Loop in Punaluu.

Heavy downpours are also drenching the Kau and Puna districts.

Naalehu Elementary School Gym has opened as a shelter for residents who need a safe place to stay.

The Robert Herkes Gym in Pahala is also open to motorists who want to wait out the Highway 11 closure.

Drivers are being urged to avoid flooded roads and use caution as conditions continue to change.
