Gov. Green signs emergency proclamation ahead of Hurricane Lowell, other tropical storms

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Gov. Josh Green signed an emergency proclamation (EP) Wednesday covering the whole state to support preparations and potential impacts from Hurricane Lowell and other storms that could affect Hawaii.

Along with Hurricane Lowell, the state is watching Hurricane Karina and Tropical Storm Marie.

“This is a very serious hurricane. It’s missing most of the state, but again, if it veers back, we would see heavy winds starting on Sunday, and then Monday it could be very ferocious,” Green said in an update posted to social media.

The proclamation allows the state and county agencies to mobilize personnel, equipment and resources quickly as recovery efforts continue from Lala.

Currently, six high-water vehicles are being sent to Kauai.

“We could see this hurricane, which is a Category 4 hurricane, with 140 mile per hour winds, we could see it tipping back toward Kauai and impacting that extraordinary county. So we have to be prepared,” Green said.

In addition, the state said the EP:

Officials said the proclamation does not order evacuations, impose a curfew, or close schools, businesses or government offices. Those will be announced separately by the appropriate authorities, if needed.

The governor’s office said the emergency relief period begins immediately upon issuance of the EP and will continue through Nov. 1, unless terminated or superseded by a separate proclamation.
