Automatic SNAP replacement benefits issued to some Hawaii residents after Lala

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – SNAP recipients in areas hardest hit by power outages and damage from Tropical Cyclone will start receiving automatic SNAP benefit replacements as early as Thursday.

The Hawaii Department of Human Services implemented an Automated Mass Replacement (AMR) for households on Hawaii Island, Oahu, and West Maui.

DHS said the value will equal 45% of the August benefits for each affected household.

SNAP recipients in other areas affected by Lala can apply for replacement benefits through Sept. 13. That deadline was extended from the standard federal 10-day reporting window. A written statement must be included in the request.

Households in the AMR-designated areas that lost food worth more than 45% of their benefits also have until Sept. 13 to request additional benefits.

“Many families are still dealing with the serious impacts of Tropical Cyclone Lala — spoiled food, damaged homes and difficulties accessing essential services,” said Governor Josh Green. “These replacement benefits and the extended reporting period ensure that SNAP households get the support they need to continue feeding their families while they recover.”
