Honolulu Fire Department prepares for increased risk of wildfires ahead of storm

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Fire Department is preparing for Tropical Storm Lala by planning ahead for both storm-related emergencies and heightened wildfire threats.

First responders are securing resources and personnel to address any emergencies that may arise.

HFD says dry vegetation, combined with rising wind speeds, creates a heightened risk of wildfires, especially in West Oahu.

“We definitely have an increased chance of wildfires, increased wind, a lot of vegetation, it makes it more likely that a fire can start and spread quickly, especially in storm conditions,” HFD Captain Jacob Pekelo said. “With the wind coming, it could pose some risks.”

To meet the challenges of the incoming weather system, Pekelo says the department is focused on coordination, staffing, and equipment logistics.

The public is encouraged to prepare for the storm by gathering important items, like medications, and having an emergency plan to follow in the worst case scenarios.
