Maui security guard beaten to death; champion swimmer charged with murder

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A champion swimmer was charged Thursday, accused of beating a 63-year-old security guard to death at a West Maui condominium complex.

Maui Police Department officials identified the victim Thursday as Michael Dyer of Lahaina.

Legend Storer, 20, also of Lahaina, was charged Thursday with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and indecent exposure.

He remains in custody without bail, police said.

Slain guard remembered as family man, ‘great person’

Police said surveillance video showed a naked man, later identified as Storer, attacking Dyer in his office at about 1:45 a.m.

Those who knew the security guard expressed shock over the violence.

Coworker Bell Hill said Dyer was married with children, and was simply having lunch when the attack occurred.

“He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break. And he had a wife that’s a waitress at Leilani’s and kids and his whole family lost him. It’s horrible,” Hill said.

Suspect identified as former Maui Prep champion

Police said officers found Storer wandering in the area naked with numerous abrasions around 3:30 a.m.

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for an evaluation.

Police later linked him to the surveillance footage and arrested him.

Storer was listed as a freshman on Concordia University Irvine’s 2024-25 men’s swim and dive roster.

According to the university, he graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024, where he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) champion.

Neighbors raise safety concerns

Kahana resident Claudia Reed said she heard “a lot of screaming and commotion.”

The incident has left her and other neighbors feeling insecure in their own homes.

“I feel very unsafe,” Reed said. “The 15 years that I live here, I’m by myself.”
