HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii Fire Department is battling a wildfire in South Kohala, prompting a road closure in the area.

The fire was reported at around 6 p.m., and the department issued a wildfire advisory for the Kawaihae area.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said no communities are threatened at this time.

The county’s Civil Defense Agency said Kawaihae Road, from Queen Kaahumanu intersection to Waiaka Bridge in Waimea, is closed.

Hawaii Island police said Kawaihae Road will be closed for at least six hours due to the fire, and advise using Waikoloa Road as an alternate route.

Officials advise drivers to expect traffic delays and to avoid the area when possible.
