Volunteers help Hokulani Elementary move back in after storm flooding

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – After flooding from the Kona low storms forced Hokulani Elementary School to close, volunteers helped teachers and school officials move back in Saturday.

On Saturday, they returned to St. Louis Heights to help move tables, desks, chairs and supplies into brand new classrooms in preparation for the upcoming school year.

“I’m just happy, it’s hard to explain knowing that you’re back home,” said Hokulani principal Ervin Pasalo. “It’s a homecoming for us, so it’s nice to see that things are coming together after months of it looking like a disaster.”

Construction crews worked on the final touch-ups this week, and the school said new carpets, flooring, sinks, closets and bulletin boards were installed.

More than 200 volunteers helped move items into classrooms, with the work being done in an hour.
