Episode 51 fountaining begins at Kilauea summit

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Episode 51 for the ongoing Kilauea eruption began at 8:30 this morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Fountain height at the time was about 100 feet but the fountains were expected to continue to building.

Hawaii County Civil Defense issued a notice shortly before the fountaining began advising nearby residents to prepare. Low-level trade winds could blow gases and ash to Ka’u, Pahala, Naalehu, and other nearby areas, the agency said. Upper-level winds could also blow ash into communities adjacent to the summit.

Residents are encouraged to disconnect water catchment systems and made other necessary precautions. Anyone with respiratory sensitivities should shelter in place or leave the area to avoid elevated gas levels.
