Beginning in mid-December, Alaska Airlines will launch new nonstop seasonal flights between Honolulu and Boise, Idaho, and between Honolulu and Spokane, Washington, becoming the only airline to offer direct service on both routes.

The airlines will also add three weekly seasonal flights between Honolulu and Las Vegas during peak holiday and spring break travel periods.

“We’re excited to expand access to and from Hawaii with new nonstop Boise and Spokane service, giving guests in two growing markets an easier way to reach the Hawaiian Islands,” said Kirsten Amrine, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of network planning and revenue management.

As part of the changes, Hawaiian Airlines will discontinue its seasonal Honolulu-Auckland route, citing high fuel costs, slower-than-expected demand recovery, unfavorable exchange rates and changing travel trends.

“New Zealand is deeply important to us as part of our Pacific island ohana. However, we must carefully allocate our limited capacity to markets where demand is strongest,” said Andrew Stanbury, regional managing director for the South Pacific at Alaska Airlines.

The airlines said the additional domestic service will increase seasonal Hawaii capacity by 3% year over year, with up to a 6% increase during peak holiday travel periods.
