Beaches on July 5 are littered with fishing nets and lines, fireworks debris and other trash that is often left behind.

This year, the nonprofit coordinated five cleanups statewide, including one Saturday morning at Kailua Beach Park.

“I know people were celebrating all over the island, but we got about 43 pounds of trash,” said Emma Kavanaugh, a Surfrider volunteer coordinator. “Honestly, I think we were expecting more. It’s great to see that people were cleaning up after themselves and keeping the beach clean.”

Last year, over 1,400 volunteers across the country removed 50,000 pounds of litter in 50 cleanups along beaches and coastal waterways.
