New Honolulu police chief patrols Waikiki during Independence Day

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Just two days after being officially sworn in as Honolulu police chief, David Lazar was out walking a police beat Saturday.

It’s part of what he calls his “listening and learning” tour of Oahu as the city’s top law enforcement official.

Lazar explained he’s out on the street for the Independence Day holiday to show support to the officers.

“I came down here really to show my support for the officers, for the men and women that do such a great job in the Honolulu Police Department. And you know, if you think about it, these officers are leaving their families behind and they’re out here on patrol, and they’re keeping Waikiki and this entire island safe,” he said.

It’s a chance for Lazar to learn his new island beat after rising through the ranks of the San Francisco Police Department, where he retired as assistant chief.

Lazar added that there’s “no place I’d rather be than to be down here tonight.”
