10K rubber ducks race for charity on Hawaii Island on July 4th

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii Island (HawaiiNewsNow) – As Fourth of July celebrations took place Saturday, 10,000 rubber ducks raced through the lake at Kings’ Shops in Waikoloa.

The 34th annual Great Waikoloa Rubber Duckie Race returned this year, with the community fundraising supporting the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii.

“Each year, this event gives the community a fun, visible way to support programs for people with disabilities and their families across Hawaii,” said John Nishida, executive director of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii. “The duckie race has become a Waikoloa tradition because it brings people together for a celebration with a purpose.”

The event brought together a Fourth of July celebration, live entertainment and keiki activities, including a duck walk, shave ice eating and watermelon eating contests.

Around 25-thousand dollars worth of prizes were given out to those whose adopted rubber ducky passed the finish line.

Organizers said this year’s “Super Quackers” theme brought costumed superheroes throughout the center for photo opportunities for family-friendly fun.
