Pipeline break leads to wastewater spill at Pearl Harbor

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater leaked into Pearl Harbor Friday.

According to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam officials, about 2,250 gallons spilled near the piers at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard after a pipeline used to offload wastewater from ships in port ruptured.

Officials said no ship was connected to the line at the time.

The leak was discovered around 7 a.m. and stopped by noon.

Officials said the wastewater cannot be recovered but is expected to naturally break down in the environment.

The Navy said the Hawaii Department of Health was notified immediately.
