30 homes receive water catchment diverters to prevent Kilauea ashfall contamination
VOLCANO (HawaiiNewsNow) – Thirty homes in Volcano on Hawaii Island received new water catchment diverters to help protect their water supply amid Kilauea’s ongoing eruption.

On Saturday, plumbers and apprentices volunteered their time to install free water catchment diverters that allow homeowners to temporarily redirect rainwater away from their storage tanks.
The diverters help prevent homes’ water supplies from being contaminated when volcanic ash and tephra mix with runoff on rooftops.

Plumbers and Fitters UA Local 675 and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials partnered with the nonprofit Vibrant Hawaiʻi to complete the installations.
“When challenges arise, our communities have always found ways to care for one another,” said Janice Ikeda, CEO of Vibrant Hawaii. “It is a reminder that resilience is built through relationships and people willing to share their time, knowledge, and expertise in service to their community.”
