Rare Haleakala silversword begins bloom near summit
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – One of Haleakala’s rare silversword plants has begun its once-in-a-lifetime bloom near the volcano’s summit.

A volunteer with the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association has been documenting the plant’s progress for the past three weeks as its flower stalk continues to grow.
The association said the stalk now measures 31 inches, and the first flowers have started to open.

Silverswords bloom only once in their lifetime, then die—releasing seeds across the slopes of Haleakala.
The Hawaii Pacific Parks Association said it will continue documenting the bloom through the full flowering cycle and seed release.
