If the eruption occurs, ash and tephra could fall downwind. Officials said low-level winds are expected to push tephra west of the summit, though it could also move north into communities along Highway 11.

Officials urged people living downwind of Kilauea’s summit to be ready to take precautions if needed, including disconnecting water catchment systems. People with respiratory sensitivities should avoid the area.

Drivers should watch for tephra on roadways, which can reduce visibility and cause traffic slowdowns. Officials said there is no threat to communities at this time.
