The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. on the side of Hana Highway between Hookipa Beach Park and Mama’s Fish House, according to Maui Police Department officials.
A 46-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman were confronted by an unknown man who shot both of them with what sources say was not a real gun. The suspect then stole their vehicle.
Both victims were treated and released at the scene by medics. One of the victims said they are OK but did not want to be on camera.

Officers found the stolen vehicle shortly after in Haiku and found a second vehicle believed to be connected to the incident. As officers approached, both vehicles fled and were left abandoned, MPD officials said. The occupants fled on foot into the surrounding pastureland.
Residents in the area said they were concerned about the incident.
“We are just sitting out here going, Oh, OK, something is going on, and then my girlfriend texted me, ‘Are you guys OK?!’ And we were like, ‘Yeah.’ But we still didn’t know what was happening,” said Suzanne Cummings, a Kuau resident. “We didn’t know until we reached work, and then I was worried about my girlfriend who lives up Haiku, wondering if she’s OK.”
Maui police officials confirmed this was not a random incident and said there is no danger to the community.
