Hui Hana Paʻakai o Hanapēpē organized the workday and welcomed volunteers to help clear sand from the park, with assistance from the county and other partners.

The park is home to traditional Hawaiian salt making, a practice kept alive by 22 Kauaʻi families who harvest salt from its beds.

Lowell’s storm surge changed the area, pushing sand into the beach park and salt beds and making the clay more porous.

Organizers said more community workdays will be scheduled in the future. For more information, visit protectpaakai.org.
