Sensory-friendly spaces expand to all 10 UH campuses

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A sensory-friendly initiative designed to help students manage stress and improve focus has expanded to all 10 University of Hawaii campuses.

The effort began two years ago at UH Manoa, where the Center on Disability Studies’ CAMP+U project helped open the campus’ first sensory room.

Now, every UH campus has access to a portable sensory kit that can be used to create dedicated rooms, integrated spaces or pop-up experiences.

The kits include more than a dozen tools, such as fidget toys, lighting projectors, lamps, a space tent and a bean bag chair.

“College can be overwhelming for anyone, and sometimes students simply need a place where they can pause, reset and return to class feeling ready to learn,” said Holly Manaseri, a faculty member with the UH Manoa Center on Disability Studies and project director.

Campuses have adapted the program to fit their needs, with some hosting sensory pop-ups during high-stress periods like midterms and finals.

At Kapiolani Community College, student Arriana Simpao said the space can be especially helpful during finals season.

“Finals season gets overwhelming, and sometimes you just crave a good dark room,” Simpao said.

An ongoing study is also examining the impact of the initiative.

Project evaluator Manca Sustarsic said feedback from more than 500 visitors across the UH system showed people reported feeling calmer, more relaxed and happier after using the spaces.

Preliminary findings also showed reductions in stress, anxiety and frustration, along with improved focus and motivation.

The CAMP+U project focuses on supporting student success, with particular attention to students with learning differences and disabilities.
