Police investigate alleged teen assault at Maui canoe regatta

KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui police are investigating a brawl that broke out at the final local canoe regatta of the season at Hoaloha Park in Kahului on July 18.

Marjorie Kahookele said she was at the end of the beach when she received a phone call saying her hanai son, NaPueo, had been knocked out by an adult man.

“She was hysterical, told me I needed to come over on to this side because she said NaPueo just got knocked out by an adult,” Kahookele said.

Kahookele said NaPueo was getting lunch when the adult man pushed him for talking to his daughter.

“The father shoved him. My other son tried to help him, who then ended up getting shoved by this man,” Kahookele said. “During this time, an adult son of theirs came around to knock him. Not sure, I was told from the back, from the front, putting him on the ground and then mounting him and then starting to strike him, him and another son. Meanwhile, supposedly dad is encouraging this behavior to continue. And I’m appalled. Like, who does this? How do we allow this?”

Kahookele, a retired Maui police officer, said NaPueo suffered a concussion, bruises, pain to his head and ears, dizziness, and headaches.

“I’m better. Just still the concussion. Aches and pains, some bruises,” NaPueo said.

The canoe club involved, which Hawaii News Now is not naming, said it is aware of the incident.

The Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association said it is also investigating.

“We take these matters seriously as an association. We want it to be a safe, fun place for people to enjoy canoe paddling. So we have, at this point, we’re waiting for reports, eyewitness statements to come in, which we just got another one today,” said Keone Ball, president of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association.

Maui police have launched third-degree assault and disorderly conduct investigations. No arrests have been made as of this report.
