Maui police lieutenant arrested on federal public corruption charges
MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) – A high-ranking Maui Police Department officer has been arrested by federal agents on charges related to public corruption.

The department confirmed Lt. Michael Vaituulala, who leads MPD’s Criminal Intelligence Unit, was taken into custody on Tuesday. The unit answers directly to Chief John Pelletier.

Vaituulala was temporarily suspended without pay earlier this year in connection with an illegal fireworks incident on New Year’s Day.

Sources said that incident is part of the new allegations.
The lieutenant is expected to appear in federal court Thursday.
