Maui mayor to pause re-election campaign on wildfire anniversary
WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen will suspend his re-election campaign activities on Saturday in observance of the three-year anniversary of the Maui wildfires.

Bissen’s campaign announced that all election-related events, campaign-related media interviews, and statements will be paused until 8 p.m. Saturday, which also marks the state’s primary Election Day.
“Aug. 8 will forever carry profound meaning for Maui County,” Bissen said in a statement. “It is a day to honor those we lost, hold their families close, and recognize all whose lives were forever changed.”

Instead of campaigning, the mayor plans to spend the day participating in community gatherings and remembrance events, including the Kuhinia Maui remembrance gathering on Saturday evening.
“There is a time for campaigning and a time to simply be together,” Bissen said. “My place that day is alongside our community, reflecting on the lives we lost and the strength and aloha that have carried Maui Nui through these past three years.”
