Maui County opening temporary evacuation points ahead of Hurricane Lala

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – With Hurricane Lala approaching the islands, County of Maui emergency officials identified temporary evacuation points (TEPs) that are proactively opening or are planning to open if conditions worsen.

Officials said the sites can convert to shelters if needed.

What to bring to a temporary evacuation point

Unlike standard emergency shelters, TEPs provide only a safe gathering area and do not stock supplies. Residents planning to use these sites need to bring their own food, water, medications, and other essential items.

Pets are allowed at TEPs only if they are secured in crates or cages. If officials decide to convert a TEP into a traditional shelter, they will then provide cots, food, and water.

The county said there are currently 33 individuals at temporary evacuation points (TEPs).

Ka Hale A Ke Ola has 10 beds available and is prepared to increase capacity if additional sheltering needs arise.
