Iolani Palace celebrates Queen Liliuokalani’s birthday, Hawaiian History Month

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – ʻIolani Palace celebrated Hawaiian History Month and Queen Liliʻuokalani’s birthday during this month’s Kamaʻāina Sunday event.

Attendees enjoyed hula performances, floral kūpeʻe making, and lauhala weaving. Alongside the festivities was a remembrance of the historic events that took place at the palace 133 years ago.

Kumu hula Sallie Lehumakamai Yoza of Hālau ʻO Nāpualaikauikaʻiu said she and her hālau were honored to share their moʻolelo.

“It means so much because I want the keiki to understand how important it is and to remember all that our nā aliʻi have left for us, especially on this ʻāina. It holds so much history,” Yoza said.

The first 500 kamaʻāina at Sunday’s event also received a complimentary audio tour of ʻIolani Palace.

ʻIolani Palace hosts Kamaʻāina Sundays on the second Sunday of every month. The next event is scheduled for Oct. 11.
