Hawaii Supreme Court declares Council Chair Tommy Waters ineligible for election
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii Supreme Court this morning upheld the ruling of Circuit Court Judge James Ashford that Council Chair Tommy Waters is ineligible to run for an additional term after already serving nearly eight years.

The ruling ends a chaotic legal and political battle that began when Waters candidacy was approved by the city clerk, despite the county’s two term limit.
Waters argued that because the beginning of his first term was four months late, he did not serve two full four year terms as described in the city charter.
Judge Ashford said the charter was clear that Waters was elected to a full term regardless of when the term began.

Waters name was on the primary election ballot, but was disqualified after the East Honolulu district voters had already began casting their votes.
Waters was disqualified by the clerk and but still collected enough votes to finish second to Trevor Ozawa and ahead of Tara Gregory. The court ordered that Ozawa and Gregory should appear on general election ballot in a run off.
