State librarian Stacey Aldrich said the week coincides with the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week.

“Our challenge is not everybody agrees on what stories matter and it’s a hard place to hold because we want to create space for everybody,” said Aldrich.

“We want everyone to know that we do believe every story matters and that we’re working very hard to make sure we have those stories available to everyone, and we want to invite everybody this week to come in and share with us the stories that matter to them,” she added.

Sharing stories at libraries

From now through Oct. 10, public libraries are featuring special displays where patrons of all ages can share the stories that matter to them, explore books from the library’s collection, and discover stories shared by others.

The displays include publications with themes and topics specific to Hawaii.

“We want to remind people about their freedom to read, that there are so many stories out there to experience and to learn about new cultures, learn about different kinds of people, learn about history,” said Aldrich.

Librarians encourage the public to keep exploring the books available at public libraries after the week ends.

“Reading an actual physical book is an amazing opportunity to exercise your brain and to also improve your focus so that we’re not all just scrolling and not remembering anything and not really connecting with anyone,” said Aldrich.
