Hawaii County conducts pre-Moke damage assessment

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – Before Moke reached Hawaii Island, county crews assessed some of the damage from Hurricane Lala.

As of Sunday, officials said Lala destroyed more than 200 homes and 15 businesses. Roads still need repairs, and power across the island has not been fully restored.

As of Sunday, Hawaiian Electric said about 6,460 customers are still without power.

Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda said the super El Nino is making it difficult to predict where the water will go in the flood channels and canals ahead of the storm.

“Well, you know, Moke is downgraded, but it still could bring some rain, so let’s still be vigilant,” he said.

Alameda added that residents in areas that are already saturated should pay attention to the flood watch that is in effect for Hawaii Island, which currently lasts until 6 p.m. Monday.
