From behind bars: Maui murder suspect claims inconsistencies in evidence ahead of trial

WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Maui man charged with murder in the 2020 death of 20-year-old Keenan Blair is speaking out from jail, claiming he is innocent.

William Douglas Allen called Hawaii News Now from Maui Community Correctional Center, having been in custody for six years awaiting trial.

“It’s stressful in here. It sucks being accused of a crime that you didn’t do,” Allen said.

Keenan Blair was found beaten to death in Paia in 2020. Maui police arrested Allen, who they identified as Blair’s acquaintance, and prosecutors indicted him for murder, arson and kidnapping.

Allen mailed documents to Hawaii News Now that he said are part of a detective’s report on his case, which he said he received from his attorney through discovery.

The report states there was blood splatter in Allen’s car on the inside of the passenger side door.

Allen underlined a portion of the report that read, “I utilized the vehicle key, which was on the front passenger seat.”

He also provided a photograph that he says shows vehicle keys in the center console.

In another photograph, he wrote, “Where’s the water and peanuts,” and “What is this in its place?” and “Putting stuff in the van?”

Allen said the photos differ from the detective’s report.

“I’m just trying to figure out how to get this out so it doesn’t happen to anybody else again,” Allen said.

Court records show Allen’s case was dismissed previously. He said he is confident it will be dismissed again.

“Once you get accused of something, the whole world believes that you’re guilty of it. But the truth is, you’re innocent until you’re proven guilty,” Allen said.

Maui County’s Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin said it is unethical to make statements regarding the evidence in a pending case.

Hawaii News Now also contacted Blair’s family and Allen’s attorney about the allegations. Both declined to comment.

Allen’s next court date is scheduled for October. His trial is scheduled for November.
