Flags ordered at half-staff across Hawaii ahead of former Gov. Ariyoshi’s interment

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Gov. Josh Green has ordered U.S. and Hawaii state flags flown at half-staff at all state offices and National Guard facilities to honor former Gov. George R. Ariyoshi.

Governor Green made the announcement on Thursday that the flags of the United States of America and the state of Hawaiʻi be flown at half-staff at the Hawaii State Capitol, all state offices and agencies, and all Hawaiʻi National Guard facilities to honor the late Gov. George R. Ariyoshi and in recognition of his extraordinary service to the state of Hawaii.

Flags shall be lowered from sunrise on Friday and remain at half-staff through sunset on the day of his interment, Monday, September 21. At sunrise on Tuesday, September 22, the flags shall be raised to full staff.

The governor said this order reflects the gratitude of the people of Hawaii for Governor Ariyoshi’s historic leadership, lifelong commitment to public service, and lasting contributions to the state.

Governor Ariyoshi was born in Honolulu on March 12, 1926 and died on April 19, 2026, at the age of 100.

“Governor Ariyoshi was a true model of public service whose leadership helped shape modern Hawaii,” said Governor Green. “He served with courage, humility and an unshakable devotion to our people. Hawaii is stronger because of his life’s work and we lower our flags in profound gratitude for a legacy that will endure for generations.”
