First Alert Forecast: Tracking stronger trades later this week

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Happy Tuesday evening! Trade winds are building back across the islands today, bringing a few showers, mainly to windward areas and the Big Island.

A weak trough near the Big Island has been bringing clouds and showers to windward areas overnight, with some locations picking up more than an inch of rain.

However, rainfall rates have remained mostly light to moderate, and there are no flooding concerns at this time.

That trough will gradually weaken and shift westward today, so showers should taper off by this evening.

The Big Island could still see a few afternoon showers, especially over interior and mauka areas. Elsewhere, drier weather is expected, with just a few passing showers along windward slopes.

By Wednesday, conditions should turn drier statewide as the trough moves away.

Looking ahead, trade winds will strengthen Thursday and become breezy to locally strong by Friday and into the weekend as high pressure builds north of the state.

That means more typical trade wind showers favoring windward and mountain areas, with a slight uptick in showers possible this weekend.

For the beaches, north and west shore surf will build today as a northwest swell arrives, bringing waves closer to seasonal averages through Wednesday.

Surf will ease later in the week before another north-northwest swell builds Friday into the weekend. South shore surf will gradually decline through Wednesday, with another south swell helping maintain near-seasonal surf later in the week.
