First Alert Forecast: Tracking gusty winds as Lowell passes south

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Lowell is becoming a bigger weather factor for Hawaii this week, but the impacts will likely change as the storm passes south of the islands depending on its intensity and size. We will be facing gusty trade winds and as the storm passes to our south.

Tuesday, we’ll start to see more moisture move in, bringing an increase in windward and mauka showers and more humid conditions. Then by Wednesday afternoon through Friday, the pressure gradient between Lowell to our south and strong high pressure to our north could really crank up the trade winds. Some areas could see gusts over 50 mph, so wind may end up being the biggest concern especially gusty downsloping winds.

The bulk of Lowell’s rain is still expected to stay south of the state, although some outer rainbands could bring enhanced showers Friday into Saturday.

Then we get into the big question mark: Labor Day weekend.

We have much more confidence in Lowell passing south of the Big Island Wednesday night into Thursday, but what happens after that is still very uncertain.
