First Alert Forecast: Lighter winds, drier conditions

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Pretty dry conditions today and Monday. Light to moderate background trade winds will prevail, allowing sea breezes to develop in sheltered leeward areas. A brief increase in showers is expected Monday night, mainly over Hawai`i Island, before we return to relatively dry trades through the end of next week. Wind speeds are forecast to increase from Friday into next weekend.

This morning, Kauai and the Big Island were mostly cloudy, while the other islands had some clouds and some sun. A few showers were over Kauai, with more rain southwest of the island. Light winds were blowing from the east at 5 to 10 mph. The winds should stay light today, allowing local sea breezes to form and possibly bring showers to leeward areas—the sides of the islands sheltered from the usual trade winds.

A weak weather system east of the Big Island is expected to fade and move northeast, bringing mainly extra clouds. Trade winds will return, first from the east, then from the northeast, and strengthen later this week. Rain chances are expected to rise Monday night into Tuesday as moist air moves in from the east, especially near the Big Island and along the windward sides—the areas facing the incoming trade winds—of all the islands.

Surf will be larger than usual along south- and west-facing shores today and Monday, but not dangerous enough to require an alert. South shore surf should ease Tuesday and Wednesday, then rise again Thursday and Friday. North shore surf will stay small today, drop Monday, then grow to moderate levels Tuesday. It might get bigger by the end of the week, but that’s still uncertain. East shore surf will remain small, and light winds are expected.
