First Alert Forecast: First week of school slower trade winds for some keiki

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Tracking trade winds at slower speeds! Trade winds are easing this week as the remnants of former Tropical Cyclone Genevieve linger well northeast of Hawaii.

The system is not expected to directly impact the islands, but it will weaken our usual trade winds through about Thursday.

With lighter trades, expect the typical pattern of clouds and showers to continue over windward and mauka communities, especially during the overnight and morning hours.

An upper-level trough developing west of the islands Tuesday through Thursday could enhance some of those showers, particularly across the western half of the state. Forecast models are also watching a pocket of tropical moisture that may bring a few more showers to the Big Island and Maui later this week.

For boaters, the Small Craft Advisory has been canceled as winds and seas continue to ease. Trade winds are expected to strengthen again by the end of the week as high pressure rebuilds north of the islands.

Surf will remain relatively quiet this week. South shore surf stays below average until a small, long-period south swell arrives this weekend, bringing a slight boost Saturday into Sunday.

East shore surf will gradually trend down as the trades weaken, though some lingering swell from former Genevieve will keep conditions a bit choppy. North and west shores will remain nearly flat, with only small wraparound east swell reaching some exposures.
