The fire was reported at 1:57 p.m.
Maui County officials issued the evacuation order at 2:39 p.m. for Olowalu Village, from Luawai to Ehehene Streets, in West Maui, and said it poses an immediate threat to life and property. Emergency sirens were sounded around a minute later.
A high wind warning was posted for portions of Maui County until 6 p.m. Sunday.
At around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Maui Mayor Richard Bissen told Hawaii News Now the fire was 40% contained in a 300-acre area.
As of 8:00 a.m., the county updated the estimated impacted area to more than 100 acres and said it was 70% contained.
Multiple Maui Fire Department crews, two private dozers and two private tankers are working to contain the fire.
Two helicopters are on standby, but strong winds are preventing aircraft from safely flying unless needed for an emergency.
No structures have been impacted.
“No homes at this point have been threatened. No lives have been threatened as well. We’re blessed with that. The high winds make it tricky,” Bissen said.
Honoapiilani Highway was initially closed for six hours from North Kihei to Olowalu General Store.
A contraflow was opened at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
At 10:30 p.m., the state Department of Transportation said Honoapiilani Highway between N. Kihei Road and Olowalu reopened.
