Coast Guard reopens commercial port across Hawaii after Lala passes

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The U.S. Coast Guard has reopened all Hawaii ports Sunday after Tropical Storm Lala passed through the state over the weekend.

As of 4 p.m., USCG Captain of the Port (COTP) Honolulu reopened all commercial ports in Hawaii after an assessment.

“While all commercial ports across the state are open to vessel traffic, our priority remains supporting post-storm recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of our maritime community,” said Acting COTP Cmdr. Jeffrey Padilla.

Although the threat of Lala has passed, the Coast Guard said mariners and the public should exercise caution.

“There are still strong winds, rain, large waves and flood watches in place for many areas,” Padilla said. “Remain aware of potential hazards and give recovery crews the space they need to safely restore our communities and waterways.”

On Saturday, COTP had set conditions to Zulu and closed all commercial ports due to increased weather conditions from the storm, which was producing hurricane-force winds and dangerous waves at the time.

USCG public safety messages

Stay off the water

USCG’s search-and-rescue capabilities degrade as storm conditions strengthen and help could be delayed.

Secure belongings

Trailerable boats should be pulled from the water and stored in a place not prone to flooding. Those who leave their boats in the water are reminded to double up all lines, update their beacon’s registration, and secure all devices safely to their vessel prior to the storm.

Stay clear of beaches

Wave heights and currents typically increase before a storm makes landfall. Even the best swimmers can fall victim to strong waves and rip currents caused by tropical storms and hurricanes. Swimmers should stay clear of beaches until local lifeguards and law enforcement officials say the water is safe.

Stay informed

Mariners should monitor VHF-FM Channels 16 and 22A for Broadcast Notice to Mariners and watch for MSIB updates via email. Up-to-date port status information can be found at the USCG Navigation Center website.
