The men say they were innocent bystanders who were on University Avenue during a massive manhunt was underway on Jan. 1, 2024.

Honolulu taxpayers will cover the cost of a nearly $2 million settlement for a lawsuit claiming police used physical force on the two men.

The City Council approved the settlement Wednesday.

The manhunt ended with a shootout that resulted in the shooting death of suspect Sidney Tafokitau and the wounding of two officers.

About 300 yard away from the scene of the manhunt, Tevita Cadiente, 25, and his father were reportedly treated violently by HPD.

The federal lawsuit says Cadiente was rammed against a fence by a police vehicle and then beaten by multiple officers after officers mistook him for the suspect during the 9-hour manhunt on New Years Day 2024.

The suit also says Cadiente’s father, 49 year-old Vaokehekehe Mataele, was handcuffed and held on the University Avenue pavement.
