Deadly crash shuts down Moanalua Rd. east near freeway onramp

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – One person has died after a multi-vehicle crash that shut down Moanalua Road eastbound alongside Moanalua Freeway.

The crash occurred at around 3:40 p.m. before the road splits into the freeway onramp and continues to N. King Street.

The Honolulu Fire Department said they were called to the scene of a four-vehicle accident with five occupants still inside.

HFD crews stabilized the vehicle and used hydraulic resuce tools to extract one person, while the rest were able to exit with help from firefighters.

Fire officials said medical care for a total of seven people was transferred to the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services at around 4:20 p.m.

EMS confirmed one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics treated and transported a man and woman to the hospital in critical condition.

Three women were also taken in serious condition, EMS said.

A city HNL Alert said the far right lane of Moanalua Freeway was also closed.

Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

Drivers are advised to take alternate routes.
