Overnight runway work at HNL may increase aircraft noise this week

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Residents near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport may hear increased aircraft noise over the next week as the state closes a runway overnight for repairs.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is closing Runway 8R/26L nightly from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., starting Monday, June 1, through Monday, June 8 at 4 a.m.

Officials said the closures are needed to complete multiple projects, including runway and taxiway light replacement and taxiway repairs.

During the closures, arriving flights will primarily use Runway 4R, with some using Runway 8L, HDOT said. Departing flights will likely use Runway 8L.

HDOT said it has coordinated with airlines and other partners to minimize flight impacts, but increased noise may be experienced in surrounding neighborhoods, particularly in the ʻEwa areas.
