Kilauea precursory activity continues ahead of episode 48

Shortly before 7:45 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey forecasted the possible eruption timeline of around 8 p.m. Sunday to later Monday, based on seismic velocity analysis. Velocities are projected to reach optimum levels on multiple stations at around 3 a.m. Monday.

USGS said sluggish lava overflows began at the south vent shortly before 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Since then, there were 35 south vent overflows by around 10:30 a.m., and it has since risen to 59 overflows, all related to gas pistoning at around 7:30 p.m.

The Weather Service said that if you live near the summit or plan to visit, stay informed about the latest weather and volcanic conditions.
Officials are also advising the public to be careful of ash, Pele’s hair and other tephra that might be picked up by the wind during fountaining.
