UH launches ‘Next Step Scholarship’ to help community college transfers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaii is launching a new scholarship program aimed at helping community college students continue their education at a four-year campus.

The new “Next Step Scholarship” will provide financial support to eligible UH Community College students who earned an associate degree during the 2025-26 academic year. It also applies to students who completed enough credits in an approved pathway or major.

Students enrolled full time at UH Hilo, UH Manoa, UH Maui College, or UH West Oahu during the fall 2026 semester will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Part-time students will receive $1,000.

“The goal is just to make it as seamless as it possibly can be so that you can continue your education,” said UH President Wendy Hensel.

Students from its seven community colleges are already accepted into UH four-year campuses through a transfer process that waives application fees and eliminates the need for a new application.

UH officials said 438 students have already received the scholarship after beginning the transfer process, while more than 1,100 additional students are eligible.

“Well, when you stop out between your associate’s degree and your bachelor’s degree, there’s a high likelihood you’re not going to come back,” Hensel said. “And we need this talent for workforce development.”

Officials said the scholarship is part of a broader effort to remove barriers to higher education and strengthen Hawaii’s workforce pipeline.

Students are also encouraged to complete the FAFSA to qualify for additional financial aid opportunities.
